  1. Introductory message to church family and guests

  1. Come thou fount of every blessing

  1. Take a minute in silence to search your own heart and confess your sins (thought, word, and deed) before God.
  1. Prayer – Take time to read and pray slowly (from the ‘Valley of Vision’ collection of prayers):

Lord Jesus, give me a deeper repentance, a horror of sin, a dread of its approach. Help me to flee it and jealously to resolve that my heart shall be yours alone.

Give me a deeper trust, that I may lose myself to find myself in you, the ground of my rest, the spring of my being.

Give me a deeper knowledge of you as Saviour, Master, Lord, and King.

Give me deeper power in private prayer, more sweetness in your Word, more steadfast grip on its truth.

Give me deeper holiness in speech, thought, action, and let me not seek moral virtue apart from you.

  1. Assurance of pardon

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

(Romans 5:8-9)

  1. Christ the sure and steady anchor

  1. Scripture Reading: Psalm 2

1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?

2 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One.

3 “Let us break their chains,” they say, “and throw off their fetters.”

4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.

5 Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,

6 “I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

7 I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.

8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.

9 You will rule them with an iron sceptre; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.

11 Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

  1. Scripture Reading: Acts 4:23-31

23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.

25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.’

27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.

29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.

30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

  1. Sermon

  1. Prayer:

Sovereign Lord, you made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them. You are the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. You are eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in your power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. We praise you that nothing happens except through you and by your will.

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot? Why do the kings and rulers take their stand against you? Why do we ourselves rebel when you are the source of all life and joy and peace? We praise you that your enemies cannot overcome your holy will and purpose. Indeed even those who conspired against our Lord Jesus did only what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. There is none like you.

Today we pray for the persecuted church. We think of China where crackdowns against Christians have increased in recent years. Please enable your servants there – and in every place where your people are threatened – to speak your word with great boldness. Move by your Holy Spirit to build your church even where the fury of Satan is most fully felt. Bring an end to oppression. Let justice flow like rivers.

And help us here in Ireland to be faithful at all costs, standing up for truth, persevering in love, and bearing witness to the only Lord of all. Help us this week, by your Spirit, to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Be honoured and glorified in our church family at this time. Protect and strengthen every marriage. Help us to lead our children in your ways. Bless our work and make us faithful to serve. Be near to the lonely. Make us alert to the needs around us. And grow our love for one another.

We ask all this in Jesus’ name, and for his sake and glory.

  1. O great God
